For example, the greatest loss for investors according to Dalbar data over the past 30 years came in October 2008. This was a volatile month; the S&P 500 started above 1,100 but at times closed in the 800s, representing a decline of 27% within a single month. Only the S&P 500 then rebounded somewhat and finished the month 14% off the lows. Clearly, October 2008 was a roller coaster of a month and relatively unusual in market history - we saw greater swings in October 2008 than are often seen over a whole year.

These extended hours may be helpful for someone looking to make a move when big news breaks on a company outside of market hours. After all, news doesn't always break at the most opportune time. But aspiring investors should still approach premarket and aftermarket hours with great caution. There are significantly fewer people trading during these extended hours, which can often mean greater volatility in stock price.

This book not only shows the historical correspondence of long-term planetary cycles to long-term cycles in the U.S. Stock Market, but also provides an excellent model for investing based upon this knowledge. It combines the market timing techniques of cycles, as explained in Volume 1, with the market timing correlations of geocosmic time bands, to produce a very accurate method of narrowing the probable time band for long-term cycle tops and bottoms in the U.S. Stock Market. An effective investment plan is then described for entering the stock market, to increase one's probability of capturing at least two-thirds of the bull-market move, once the timing criteria are satisfied, in each 4-year cycle.
However, this model has inherent problems since stocks carry more risk and are more volatile than government bonds. For example, future earnings forecasts may rise or fall in equity markets, which can positively or adversely affect your investment. What if the 12-month earnings predictions are dreadful as the economy is forecasted to go into a recession? The traditional Fed Model would not account for this future performance and therefore may inaccurately suggest to investors that stocks represent a better option than bonds.

Given the sheer variety of cryptocurrencies you can’t define all of them as securities or all of them as currencies. Instead a much better analogue for cryptocurrencies are real-world commodities, indeed Bitcoin is often referred to as “digital gold” and many cryptocurrencies are “mined” by computers. A commodity is normally free from outside control, barring regulations, and their value is determined by market factors.

The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) provides inside information about purchases and sales of futures contracts. The largest players in each market are required to disclose their positions to the CFTC on a daily basis and this report is released on a weekly basis. These traders are separated into Commercial Hedgers and Large Speculators. It is common knowledge that Large Speculators (Managed Money) are holding a significant informational edge over other traders as far as fundamental supply-and-demand statistics are concerned. So if you are trading commodities, forex or interest rates, you should not make a trade without looking what Managed Money is doing!
Futures are a derivative product that allows traders to gain exposure to commodity prices without physically taking possession of the asset. With these contracts, traders agree to purchase a certain amount of a commodity at a date in the future (the expiration date). The trader pays for the contract at the time of purchase. If prices rise between the purchase date and the expiration date, the trader will profit, whereas if prices fall, the trader will lose money.
Have you heard about the Everything Bubble? Some analysts believe that after the dot-com bubble of the 1990s and the housing bubble of the 2000s, we are in the middle of a price bubble in virtually all asset classes simultaneously caused by the Fed’s unusually easy monetary policy with ultra low interest rates. Although we agree that the US central bank maintained federal funds rate too low for too long, the narrative about a dangerous bubble inflating in a wide variety of countries, industries, and assets does not make sense. The bubble means that the price of an asset deviates from the fundamental value, increasing excessively, to a much greater extent than on other markets. It should be now clear that the existence of overvalued assets necessarily means that other assets are undervalued, so there can’t be the ‘everything bubble’. Sorry, but those who wait for the total asset apocalypse might be disappointed.
While back-testing such techniques reveals profitable results, it is not a slam-dunk for future outcomes. Like any system, it takes a disciplined investor to follow the system and not be swayed by their own emotions when the data is not in agreement. Even for proven market timing strategies, there will always be investor error to consider, since computer-based models don’t take this into account. Moreover, the economy and market are ever-changing and may introduce new variables or alter old assumptions which can further complicate these strategies or affect their results.
Today, nobody argues that the stock market should yield more than the bond market. But other indicators are being used as rules of thumb to judge whether the market may be at an extreme. Typically, these charts show a compelling and simple relationship that appears to identify cyclical market peaks and bottoms. I will touch on a few of the charts I encounter on a regular basis. My point is not to argue whether the U.S. stock market today is expensive or not, but merely to point out flaws in these indicators that suggest an easy answer.
I realize it's actually kind of dumb for me to tell others how well this newsletter works, because if people learn that markets can indeed be timed, then the markets eventually become efficient, and that methodology stops working. But I think the vast majority of people still think market timing is a hoax, so there's little risk in the markets ever becoming efficient. And I write this review because I'd like to do my part to help drive some business to Campbell, since he helped me make a little money. Thanks, Bob!
“In 2017, the percentage of S&P 500 sales from foreign countries increased slightly, after two years of measured decreases. The overall rate for 2017 was 43.6%, up from 43.2% in 2016, but down from 44.3% in 2015 and 47.8% in 2014, which was at least an 11-year record high. S&P 500 foreign sales represent products and services produced and sold outside of the U.S.“

The recent upswing in NG prices has been an incredible trade for many, yet we believe a top is now forming in Natural Gas that could catch many traders by surprise.  The recent upside gap in price and upward price volatility would normally not concern long traders.  They would likely view this as a tremendous success for their long NG positions, yet we believe this move is about to come to a dramatic end – fairly quickly.

AGRICULTURAL MARKETS OVERVIEW FOR MONDAY: (11/19) Cycles are mixed for the next few days with some bias toward lower action. Seasonal the market rallies before Thanksgiving and there is probably enough early winter weather to prevent any serious downward action. Weather should also support meats and they will be hard to sell now and holiday trade can get thin and we try not to trade much in the meat pits before the holidays. Any strong rallies on Mondays may quickly be taken back into Tuesday/Wednesday.
"In our perspective, this move will align with commodities market timings. However, we will have to wait for Exchanges to implement the same with prior approval of SEBI. Whether the extended timings will be for all securities or securities in equity derivatives market will trade only till the time underlying equities trade and only indexes will be allowed to trade for extended hours," he further said.
I re-ran the simulation and accounted for transaction fees of $20 per trade. I also factored in slippage of 0.50% because buying large positions over a short period of time will drive prices up and cause slippage. This resulted in a 5-year annualized return of 18.9% with a max drawdown of 38.4%, and 45% of the trades were winners. But perhaps most importantly, there was a massive turnover of stocks to the tune of 400% per year, which would result in hefty fees and require a significant time investment.

The backdrop to this misery is President Mauricio Macri’s weak reform program combined with the IMF’s misdiagnosis of Argentina’s problems. Mr. Macri replaced the left-wing populist Cristina Fernández de Kirchner in December 2015. He inherited a rapidly growing public sector, huge fiscal deficits due to massive subsidies for key products, annual inflation of more than 30%, capital controls, and a dual exchange-rate system. With a slim majority in the National Congress, and facing midterm elections in October 2017, Mr. Macri adopted a gradualist approach to reform.

“Over 75% of U.S. industries have registered an increase in concentration levels over the last two decades. Firms in industries with the largest increases in product market concentration have realized higher profit margins, positive abnormal stock returns, and more profitable M&A deals, which suggest that market power is becoming an important source of value.”
In May, President Trump signed the rewrite of the 2010 Dodd-Frank law passed earlier by Congress with rare bipartisan support. The bill is the biggest rollback of bank rules since the financial crisis. According to the new law, lenders with less than $10 billion in assets will be exempted from the Volcker rule that bans proprietary trading. Moreover, the bill eases rules on all but the largest institutions, raising the threshold by which banks are considered systematically important and, thus, subject to tighter oversight from $50 to $250 billion in assets. The smallest banks between $50 and $100 billion were immediately freed of stricter regulations, while depositary institutions between $100 and $250 billion in assets will be exempt from them beginning in November 2019, although they could still be subjected to the Fed’s enhanced supervision in times of need. Last month, the Fed just unveiled a proposal for the implementation of several major provisions of the new bill.
