Researching trends and developing an understanding of the factors that move commodity markets takes considerable time and thorough research skills. Unlike stocks and bonds, the information needed to make investment decisions is often scattered in many places. Successful commodity traders are avid readers and avail themselves of information found in scholarly articles, government websites, trade publications, the Farmers’ Almanac, charting software and other sources relevant to their market.
The idea of trading prices, as opposed to physical goods, eventually made its way to other markets. In 1981, the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) launched the first cash-settled futures contract on the Eurodollar. Essentially, upon expiration of a cash-settled futures contract, the seller of the contact does not physically deliver the underlying asset but instead transfers the associated cash position. Once the US Commodities Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) approved the Eurodollar futures contract, exchanges began listing cash-settled futures contracts on traditional commodities.

The moving average is a line that plots the average price of a stock over a set period of time. A basic trading method is to buy when share prices rise above the long-term moving average and sell when the price falls below. In the paper, Technical Analysis with a Long Term Perspective: Trading Strategies and Market Timing Ability, some uncommon approaches were evaluated. One strategy was to analyze the trailing four years of market data to determine which moving average length proved the most effective for making investment decisions. Contrary to the usual calculation of moving averages using periods as short as 50 or 200 days, the moving averages in this paper were calculated over much longer periods of time.

WTI hit a low point at $56 per barrel on Wednesday and Brent hit a low just below $65 per barrel. Both crude benchmarks regained some ground at the end of the week, despite the huge increase in U.S. crude oil inventories. In fact, rising prices in the face of the 10-million-barrel increase in crude stocks suggests that oil may have already hit a bottom. “[Y]esterday’s price reaction to the US inventory data shows that negative news is now largely priced in,” Commerzbank said in a note. “This is the only way to explain why an increase in US crude oil stocks of a good 10 million barrels failed to put further pressure on prices.”

Trying to navigate the peaks and valleys of market returns, investors seem to naturally want to jump in at the lows and cash out at the highs. But no one can predict when those will occur. Of course we’d all like to avoid declines. The anxiety that keeps investors on the sidelines may save them that pain, but it may ensure they’ll miss the gain. Historically, each downturn has been followed by an eventual upswing, although there is no guarantee that will always happen. Trying to avoid risk could itself be risky, since it’s impossible to know when to get back in.
Managed Money are futures market participants who engage in futures trades on behalf of investment funds or clients. While Managed Money are commonly equated with hedge funds, they may include Commodity Pool Operators and other managed accounts as well as hedge funds. They tend to be early, but they are usually right on the long run. Extreme divergences in the net positions of large traders (managed money) and the price of the underlying security have proven to be reliable indicators of important trend changes.
Some newer cryptocurrencies can be considered something closer to securities. Indeed, the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority (FINMA) has published guidelines on Initial Coin Offerings or ICOs breaking them into three categories. Many ICO tokens act as something akin to shares in a company and FINMA plans to regulate them under the same rules.
The economic principle of substitution creates a risk of investing in any commodity. As prices for a particular commodity climb, buyers will seek cheaper substitutions, if available. For example, cheaper metals such as aluminum often substitute for copper in many industrial applications. Similarly, farmers may substitute between corn, oats, wheat and barley as livestock feed based on price.

Wheat: Wheat grows on six continents and for centuries has been one of the most important food crops in the world. Traders compare wheat prices to other grains such as corn, oats and barley. Since these commodities can be substituted for one another, changes in their relative prices can shift demand between them and other products such as soybeans. Demand for cheap and nutritious food sources in developing nations should continue to drive interest in the wheat market.
Today, nobody argues that the stock market should yield more than the bond market. But other indicators are being used as rules of thumb to judge whether the market may be at an extreme. Typically, these charts show a compelling and simple relationship that appears to identify cyclical market peaks and bottoms. I will touch on a few of the charts I encounter on a regular basis. My point is not to argue whether the U.S. stock market today is expensive or not, but merely to point out flaws in these indicators that suggest an easy answer.

In contrast to models that follow earnings or trends, William O’Neil tracks the “big money” by following trading cues from institutions. He asserts that you can guess when institutions are selling since the market indices will show high volume without any price advance. He calls these “distribution days” or selling days. If you see four or five of these high volume sell-off days within one trading month, be prepared for a succeeding price drop. In other words, you should sell your equities and be in a cash position for the potential bear phase.

Buyers would place these tokens in sealed clay vessels and record the quantities, times and dates of the transactions on writing tablets. In exchange for the vessels, merchants would deliver goats to the buyers. These transactions constituted a primitive form of commodity futures contracts. Other civilizations soon began using valuable such as pigs and seashells as forms of money to purchase commodities.
Soybeans: Soybeans play a critical role in the global food ecosystem. The oil from the crop is used in many products including bread, crackers, cakes, cookies and salad dressings, while the meal from crushed soybeans serves as the main source of food for livestock. Soybean oil also serves as a feedstock in the production of biofuels. The growing need for food and fuel in emerging market economies could drive demand for soybeans. Three countries – the United States, Brazil and Argentina – account for 80% of global production.

Consider Jill and Joaquin. Jill invests $10,000 in U.S. stocks each year, starting in 1977. Like Jebediah, Jill has terrible timing, buying at each year’s monthly market high.  Then, Jill stops contributing after 10 years, stops trading and just lets her S&P 500 stocks ride. Meanwhile, procrastinating Joaquin waits till 1987 to start investing his $10,000 annually. Yet Joaquin has perfect timing and, unlike Jill, keeps adding $10,000 every year through 2018. Surely this deck must be stacked against Jill.
In the 1800s, the burgeoning grain trade led to the establishment of commodities forward contract markets in the United States. Farmers in the Midwest would bring their crops to Chicago for storage prior to shipment to the East Coast. However, during storage, the prices for these grains might change for a variety of reasons. The quality of the stored item could deteriorate, for example, or demand for the item could increase or decrease.
